S’Atra Sardigna was born in 1982 created by a group of young people who wanted to realize a pleasant job, respectful both of their own health and of that of the consumers, a job that also gets along with the protection of the environment. This is why the cooperative dealt, since the very beginning, with ecologically-sound activities always using the organic method, at first in a pioneer way, up to when it was regulated by European and national laws. It also dealt with the fruit and vegetables growing, enlarging its field of interest to the production of honey, cheeses and wine, oil and different kinds of meat.
The Cooperative firmly supports the idea of associating and in so doing it was able to promote, since the end of the eighties, the constitution of the Regional and National Associations of organic agriculture (ARPA Sardegna and AIAB) and later, different successful social experiences: (Consorzio Ecosviluppo Sardegna, Ortosarda M.O.C., Consorzio Biomediterraneo). Starting with about ten members, owners of two hectares of land, during the first years of its life a long way was covered: today the Cooperative counts about one hundred members spread over the entire Sardinia on a surface of more than two hundred hectares, all grown with the organic method. S’Atra Sardigna is now the most important organization of organic producers in the south of Italy.
